π§° What youβll need
- Clean, lint-free cloth
- Water only β no sprays or soap
- Squeegee or stiff plastic card
- Masking tape
- An extra pair of hands for larger decals
STEP 1οΈβ£ β Prepare the decal
Lay the decal flat and firmly squeegee over the clear application tape. This helps the vinyl bond properly to the tape before fitting.
If your decal arrived rolled: Light air bubbles between the clear tape and backing paper are normal and can occur during transit. They will not affect the vinyl. You may leave the decal to flatten naturally or gently smooth it with your hand.
STEP 2οΈβ£ β Prepare the surface
Clean the surface using water only, even if it appears clean. Dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.
β οΈ Do not use soaps, sprays or cleaning products, as these can prevent proper adhesion.
STEP 3οΈβ£ β Position the decal
- Hold the decal in position against the surface.
- Use masking tape to secure it temporarily.
- Step back and check the alignment and level.
For larger designs, ask someone to help with positioning.
STEP 4οΈβ£ β Apply the decal
Your decal has three layers:
- Clear application tape: the top layer, removed at the end.
- Vinyl design: the middle layer, which remains on the surface.
- Backing paper: the bottom layer, removed before application.
Small to medium decals
- Place the decal on a flat surface.
- Slowly peel away the backing paper, leaving the vinyl attached to the clear tape.
- Apply one edge to the surface first to create an anchor point.
- Slowly lower the rest while squeegeeing firmly as you go.
- Once fully applied, squeegee firmly over the entire design again.
Large decals β hinge method
- Secure the decal in position with masking tape along one long edge.
- Flip the decal back over the taped hinge.
- Carefully remove the backing paper.
- Hold the outer corners and slowly lower the decal onto the surface while squeegeeing firmly.
Assistance is strongly recommended for this method.
Very large decals β centre hinge method
- Secure masking tape down the centre of the decal.
- Peel and apply one half first, removing the backing paper up to the hinge.
- Cut away the loose backing paper and squeegee the exposed half firmly into place.
- Remove the centre tape and repeat for the other half.
This halves the working size and makes the decal easier to handle.
STEP 5οΈβ£ β Remove the application tape
- Squeegee firmly over the complete decal once more.
- Slowly peel the clear tape back at a 180Β° angle, folded back over itself.
Do not pull the tape outward towards you, as this can lift the vinyl. If any section lifts, press it back down firmly and squeegee it again before continuing.
β Final check
Inspect the vinyl carefully and run your thumb over all edges and small details to ensure full adhesion. This helps prevent lifting and water ingress.
